I’m back with my monthly post. I’m back to school and am in a new county and a new school. I am back in the self contained unit for IND, which I absolutely love. As a teacher, I have countless hours of planning and creating for the first month of school. After the initial setup I can tweak as the year goes on. I am getting to know all my students and their families. I have two paras and a nurse who I am also getting to know and support.

This post is for all the families who have children who have gone back to school in a self contained unit.

  1. Ask questions. The more questions you can ask and get answered will help build trust and create a feeling of community between home and school.
  2. Provide school with all the items your child needs to be successful at school. Diapers, pullups, clothing, snacks and sensory toys are all needed and appreciated. .
  3. Please respond to the teacher requests. The teacher is reaching out to you. This is the time to build trust.
  4. Provide the teacher with anything you think she/he should know about your child. You know your child best.
  5. Begin setting a routine now for your child to follow before and afterschool as well as at bedtime. Below are some examples.

Morning: Wake up, eat breakfast, brush teeth, get dressed, brush hair

Afterschool: Eat a snack, do homework, choose a snack for tomorrow put everything back in the backpack. put backpack near door

Bedtime: choose clothes for tomorrow, brush teeth, read a book
