I have been a teacher for the past 30 years. I have worked in public schools, regional schools and a classical charter school. I have experience working with disabilities including learning disabilities, emotional disturbances, down syndrome, communication delays, autism, dyslexia, other health impairments, physical impairments, hearing impaired, visually impaired, intellectually disabled and ADHD in grades prek (age 3) through middle school. My concentration has been with students in grades K-6. I currently support middle school. I have many strategies, games, modifications and suggestions for children who may be struggling in school. Many children are behind due to the pandemic, but extra tutoring and extra work will not move them forward quickly. They need to move at their learning speed.
The single most important thing to do to help your child, no matter what level they are at, is to read to them, with them or require 20 minutes of independent reading nightly. Children need to continue to practice their reading fluency, experience new vocabulary and increase their fluency in order to understand reading content which becomes increasingly more difficult as they age.
I tutor in person or through Zoom. Please contact me if you are interested @ 203-257-7340. I can also be reached at johndebra2020@gmail.com My fee is $25.00 for 30 minutes. I also teach hospital homebound students.
Calming Techniques
I have the type of position in which I get to see teachers at their most positive and then slowly weaken due to the pressures of all that is due and when and how it is all required to be completed. If we had the opportunity to work with students only and have someone else due the paperwork then we would be very content and positive all the time without feeling drained emotionally. Here are some tips for teachers to calm their mind and body when they feel like they are treading water without making gains.
- Go for a silent walk through your neighborhood or nature.
- Listen to calming music.
- Exercise.
- Do Yoga.
- Walk your dog.
- Read a book.
- Watch a comedy.
- Talk to a friend who isn’t a teacher.
- Go for a drive.
- Go to a salt cave.
- Get a massage.
- Get a manicure.
