Oh boy, Middle Schoolers 1 me 0

Once I got my allergies under control, in CT, I got the flu if I didn’t get the shot and the occasional stomach bug because we lived up north and it got cold. It was expected.

Since moving to Florida I’ve had a few sinus infections and Covid, but never a cold. Well, back to school 3 weeks and I’m sick along many students and teachers. It’s middle school. You would think they would cover their mouths and noses. Nope!!

Putting individuals in air conditioned buildings without fresh air and add in bacteria and germs and it’s a breeding environment.

I take daily vitamins and C and use hand sanitizer and soap and water often, but it’s still not enough.

How is your child fairing? If they’re sick please keep them home. Missing a few days of instructions is okay. Sending them to school sick is not helping them and it creates distractions for others.

There are so many students asking for tissues and coughing and sneezing that no learning is happening.

Making it worse are the scheduled tests so early in the year. Students are not physically nor mentally ready for state tests.

I personally believe they should be in school for atleast a month and get back in the swing of school and meet their new teachers and then take tests sporadically. Giving incoming 6th graders 4 tests to complete in 2 weeks is too much.

Students with special education services are given accommodations because they need them to be successful. Many accommodations are not followed at the start of school because teachers are becoming accustomed to so many new things. I’m noticing from state to state and county to county the exposure of students needs changes from special education teachers to general education teachers. It used to be a part of the back to school meetings with a time set aside for teachers to meet. That no longer occurs.

I again want to strongly stress that you should reach out to your teacher/teachers about your child’s needs and your concerns.

It is so important to build a solid foundation with your child’s teachers for the year. Make sure you come to Open House. You’ll find out a lot about expectations and may meet other families you can connect with. Teachers may walk you through their web page and should discuss any of your concerns with you.

As promised, I’ve included some home school communication pages. Be honest with your teachers about your needs regarding your child.
